Student Loan

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE STUDENT LOAN FUND?

The Student Loan Fund is designated to providing financial aid to persons enrolled in schools of higher education. Loans of $750 per semester are granted, not to exceed $1,500 per year. Each student is eligible to receive a maximum of $5,250 in loans.

WHO MAY QUALIFY?

An applicant must be a high school graduate, or equivalent (GED), active in the local church of which he/she is a member. The church must be affiliated with the American Baptist Churches of Pennsylvania and Delaware or the Philadelphia Baptist Association. It is not necessary for an applicant to be just out of high school. An applicant can be an adult returning to school.

Recommendations are required from the applicant's pastor, school guidance counselor, and three personal references. The application for a loan must be completed by the student. A co-signer, with two credit references, is required.

HOW DO I APPLY FOR A LOAN?

Application for a loan must be made at least three months prior to the date needed. Please download the following Student Loan Packet documents and follow the instructions in the documents:

REPAYMENT

Repayment of the Student Loan begins one year after graduation. Loans are to be repaid in full in five years. Interest is applied according to the promissory note each student signs (generally 0-5% with percentage added each year not to exceed 5%)

HOW IS THE STUDENT LOAN PROGRAM FINANCED?

The Student Loan Fund was established by American Baptist Women in 1959. American Baptist Women's Ministries throughout Pennsylvania and Delaware contribute on a regular basis to this fund. Special gifts may be given in honor or memory of loved ones to the Student Loan Tribute Fund. Contributions can be sent to the American Baptist Women's Ministries of PA & DE treasurer Anna Lee Earnest .

"Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth". II Timothy 2:15 (KJV)

The ABWMOPAD Student Loan is available to anyone who is a member of an American Baptist Church in Pennsylvania or Delaware. If you are interested in applying for a student loan for the fall of 2008 and have never applied before, this is the time to begin the application process. If interested, please see your Church and Community Coordinator/Student Loan coordinator or contact me. You will be sent a packet that will explain the loan information and application. It does take several months to process. Just a reminder this is a loan and does need to be paid back.

We have approximately 30 students in the program. Some students have received anywhere from one to seven loans at $750/loan. Many students are going into some form of ministry, education, engineering, and computer science - just to name a few majors.
